operetta opera ballet

Now in its eighth year, Bijou Opera is an opera film club that meets periodically to screen great opera performances (plus the occasional ballet and operetta). The programme for each year is selected by looking for gifted singers who can also act, production values that are true to the intentions of both the librettist and composer, the finest orchestral playing and ‘proper’ sets and costumes.

No competition is intended with the local multiplex cinemas which offer the latest from the Met. and La Scala, because Bijou primarily screens great performances from past decades. Bijou Opera provides the complete operatic film experience where the audience has the perception of being at a live performance. A programme is on sale before every screening, and there is a 15 minute interval when tea/coffee is served at no charge.

Bijou Opera Club

This is a specialist arts film club with membership open to all lovers of opera. No knowledge of the subject is needed to belong, just an interest. Subscriptions for 2017 are £12.00 for an individual and £18.00 for a couple (from 1 August, £6.00 single, £9.00 couple). To join, see the membership page. Members receive a mailing letter (or email) one month in advance of each session, giving full details and a ticket order form. Tickets (at £12.00 each) have to be bought in advance as performances regularly sell out. Members can buy tickets for non members (also at £12.00).

The Two Screening Venues

From the beginning of 2017, Bijou will commence screenings at two new and different venues.

  • Cirencester
At the Royal Agricultural University, using one of the smaller lecture theatres, which is equipped with all the required projection and sound equipment.

  • Cheltenham (Charlton Kings)
At the Stanton Suite in Church Piece, Charlton Kings, which is fitted out with the very latest projection and sound systems.

Both venues are well appointed, with ample comfortable seating, complete blackout and are at ground level for easy access. Convenient off street parking is available at no charge. The usual tea/coffee will continue to be served during the interval at no charge. The long established option of a Sunday lunch before the performance is also available at both venues.
