Bijou Opera is an opera film club that meets periodically to screen great opera performances (plus the occasional ballet and operetta). In planning our programme for each year, we take great care in selecting what to show. We look for singers who can also act, production values that are true to the intentions of both the librettist and composer, the finest orchestral playing and ‘proper’ sets and costumes.
In doing this, we provide something quite different from the local multiplex cinemas which offer the latest from the Met. and La Scala, because we primarily screen great performances from past decades. All our films carry subtitles in English, so whatever the original language, you can easily follow the story. A programme is on sale before every screening, and there is a 15 minute interval when tea, coffee and biscuits are served at no charge.
Our two film venues
We have two venues, one in Cirencester (The Royal Agricultural University) and the other in Cheltenham (Charlton Kings, Stanton Suite) to provide for the incresingly wide distribution of our membership. Both are commercial venues, equipped with professional high tech DVD projection and audio equipment, full blackout and comfortable seating, where everybody has a perfect view of the full size screen. All our performances take place on a Sunday afternoon, which suits our members, most of who are retired. Prior to the screening, at both venues we continue to offer the popular option of a traditional Sunday lunch, with wine plus tea/coffee.
Both the lunch and screening venues are at ground level, so are accessible for those with limited mobility.
